What is Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)?
PBS is a set of strategies that are put in place strategically and used consistently over time. PBS intentionally structures for success.
All behaviours occur within an environmental context. PBS begins all investigations by examining the scope of the problem (school-wide, group, individual). The structures for success systematically teach and acknowledge appropriate behaviours. PBS builds the capacity for all staff to correct misbehaviours in a positive and flexible environment. The objective of PBS is to have each student self-manage their behaviour.
Overall PBS is:
The intentional structuring of learning environments to equip students for behavioural success based on principles of human behaviour.
How to implement effectively:
- Defined expectations that are taught and practiced
- Consistent acknowledgement of expected behaviours
- Consistent correction of problem behaviours
- On-going use of data for decision making purposes
- Continued use of behaviour interventions
The YouTube clip below outlines the benefits of PBS which include: providing more time for instructional time and how PBS helps build cohesiveness in a school.
