Behaviour Plans and FBA
What is a Functional Behavioural Assessment (FBA)?
FBA is a variation of procedeures that ascertain the reasons for behaviours displayed by students who have disabilities. Because some children are unable (because of their disability) to explain why they are behaving inappropriately, methods were developed to help figure out why they were displaying such
actions.
FBA is the process of gathering and analyzing information about a student's behavior and accompanying circumstances in order to determine the purpose or intent of the actions.
What is a Behaviour Plan?
A behaviour plan is a proactive action plan to address behaviours that are hindering the learning of the student or others.
It contains interventions, strategies and supports to enable the student to achieve.
Who qualifies for a Behaviour Plan?
A student who's behaviour is affecting their learning or the learning of others around them.
Key points included in a Behaviour Plan are:
- Identification of key understandings: challenging behaviours, data and observations to support and document, a positive- based behaviour.
- Targeting of specific behavioural problem that is an issue and barrier to learning for the student.
- Determine the priorities by choosing 1-2 behaviours that are concerning, prioritize with health and safety of the student and others in mind first.
- Using data identify the warning sides of such behaviours (e.g. Monday mornings, after specials or when getting fidgety). Have a plan to intervene here and diffuse the situation before a crisis.
- Positive supports- identify proactive strategies and what needs to be taught/ put in place to enable the student to succeed.
Below is an example of an FBA form.
