Physical Restraint
Physical restraint uses direct physical contact that prevents or significantly restricts an individual’s movements. Physical restraint should only be used as a last resort. And only when the student’s behavior is a risk to the safety of themselves or to others. Physical restraint should only be used for the required amount of time and for no longer than 10 minutes.
Seclusion
Seclusion is the confinement of a student, on their own, in a secured room or other space from which the student is physically prevented from leaving. Seclusion should only be used as a last resort. And should only be used when the student’s behavior is a clear and imminent risk to the safety of themselves, or to others. The student must be visually monitored and should not last longer than 15 minutes for elementary school age students and 20 minutes for middle school and high school aged students.
It is very important that both Seclusion and restraint must be documented fully and parents must be informed and receive written documentation with 24 hours.
For Michigan Department of Education's procedures on Seclusion and restraint see the document: 'Supporting Student Behavior. Standards for the Emergency Use of Seclusion and Restraint. December 2006.'
